Summary of living abroad from 2005-2007
|
|
It was November 2005 when we flew out of Malaysia. We transited at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, Sweden before we arrived in Newark International, New Jersey. It was almost a twenty hour journey. I thought the traveling ends there but we had another one and a half hour flight to Columbus, Ohio. Prof. Rota, Karla and James were waiting at the luggage claiming machines when we arrived at Port Columbus International. Then they all took us for another one and a half hour car trip back to Athens. It was yet a very long journey. We were exhausted and hungry as we arrived in Athens. Luckily, Karla has provided us bread, cereals, fruits and milk.
We arrived in the middle of autumn. The leaves have turned into orange, yellow and red colors. Most of Athens people were elderly. It was really shocking when all those grannies still wear heavy make-ups and drives big American cars. I kept missing Kuala Lumpur when I arrived in Athens. Everything seems plain dull, except for those grannies who I enjoyed laughing at. It was very quite and peaceful compare to KL. And there we were, given an old wooden two storey bungalow with four bedrooms and three bathrooms. There were also an attic, an old garage and a basement where we did all our laundries and where my sister sometimes came down to play. The front yard didn't take to much space but our backyard was great. We were introduced to the local groceries stores such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and the Asian New Market.
Anyway, I got enrolled into the local high school two weeks after. The school was in The Plains. It's neighboring Athens County. Therefore it's not even near my neighborhood but it is still being called Athens High School. I was in 10th grade and my best friend was Madelaine. She's from Venezuela. I also became friends to Eddie Hornsby, Madelaine's ex-boyfriend and Amber Fellner, one of Madelaine's friends. Other than that, I accidentally joined the anime freak friends, Stephanie Hunter, Laney Knight, Kayla and others more. I had classes such as Sophomore English with Ms. Kemmerle, Junior Algebra 2 with Mrs. Fauber, Sophomore Integrated Science with Mr. Weinfurtner and Mrs. McAfee, Health Science with Mr. Robert, Mixed Media with Mrs. Gagliano, Freshman World History with Mr. Kaiser and Sophomore American History with Mr. Read.. In March, I sat for the Ohio Graduation test and I passed English for Writing and Math's with accelerated grades and English for Reading with proficient.
For almost seven months in Athens, everything went well except for the feeling of being so sucked up with the peaceful environment. The weather was also wasn't really exciting. We traveled around Ohio. We went to Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and some other places outside the state such as Parkersburg in West Virginia and North Kentucky but the scenery wasn't really nice until you reached the city itself. But the thing I like most about Columbus are Easton, the shopping center or I called it as Beverly Hills jr. and the Somalia and Arabian restaurants. Their shish kebab is my favorite. Yum!
At the end of summer of 2006, we went to England and Paris. From Columbus, we flew to Toronto, Ontario. It is the largest city in Canada. We then took off for Manchester, United Kingdom. It was a seven hour journey. My brother picked us up and brought us to his lovely university flat in Lancaster. The next day we went to Stirling and Edinburgh, Scotland. After two nights, we dropped by Lake District and Blackpool on our way back to Lancaster.
My father bought us train tickets to London. It wasn't our first journey there. We used to live in Oxford in 2001 for eight months and we went to London often using the London tube. Anyway, the next day, we took the Eurostar train to Paris. We visited the locals such as the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland. After three nights stay in France, we went back to Bayswater, then took the train again, off to Cardiff, Wales to meet my former best buddy and her father. Before going on holiday back in Malaysia, we went to Cambridge to visit the famous Cambridge University and its surroundings.
We went back to Kuala Lumpur and my grandparent's house in Kuala Terengganu within nineteen short days. I could only afford to meet my friends once. My family and I spent a lot of times at my cousin's house in Ampang, near Sri Inai Private School. We had bundles to do in this period of time. Everything was wild. We rushed to one place to another. It was really tiresome.
Sadly, we had to go back to Athens. From KLIA, we flew to London. It was our luck when the coach seats were full and we got transferred to first class. We were lingering around Heathrow before our flight to Toronto. Then we flew back to Columbus before James, my father's assistant from Malacca came to picked us up and brought us home.
I went to school a week late this 2006-2007 school year. I was already in 11th grade. Now I've made more friends and they were Alicia Boggs, Ankur Petel, Pablo Feican, An Trinh, Bica Ferraris, Allen Tindongan, Adam Koon, Nick Bolin, Leah Purdy, Avery Nelson, Derek Bolin and so much more. I had Junior/Senior English with Mrs. Hall, Senior Math 12 with Mrs. Begeley, Junior US Government with Ms. Lane, Junior/Senior Physics with Mrs. Anderson, Digital Photography with Mrs. Recktor and Multimedia Computer Application with Mr. Slattery. Four out of six classes I had, I had them with Madelaine.
By then my father now has the gut to travel far away from Athens, by car. Firstly we went to Washington DC. The weather was humid. It was still summer and everything was dry. Plus, it was Ramadan. Early autumn, we slept a night at Indianapolis, Indiana before my father drove west to St. Louis, Missouri. We had bad winter that year but we did manage to go to DeKalb and Chicago throughout winter break as the school was out early. It was pretty fun to experienced snow days for quite sometimes during school. We were either at least got to go home early or we're out of school for the whole day. Anyway, up north in Illinois was freezing. The snow was very thick and the roads were slippery. But it was really fun for me and my sister. Both of us experienced snow before when we were in Oxford but it was just a little. And back in 1995, when my parents and I migrated to Seattle, Washington, there were lots of rains instead of snows. When school resumed, I took the Scholastic Aptitude Test or also known as SAT. It is a standardized test for college admissions in the United States. But unfortunately, for a first timer, I didn't do well enough.
During spring break, surprisingly, snow was still around. It was April but it felt as if we newly entered January. We went to Washington for the second time. After one night stay at the High Commission, we took the Amtrak train up to Manhattan, New York. We were there for a few nights to a week. I just couldn't resist the kebabs sold on the street. Unfortunately we didn't go to Statue of Liberty. It was down south while we stayed near 5th avenue and the Times Square.
Besides having travel around, we did a lot of descent parties at home in Athens. It was pretty nice to have Malaysian and Indonesian people around since there weren't many of us; Malaysians anymore as Malaysian government has stopped sending students from our country to study at Ohio University. Once I was told that nearly three thousand Malaysians lived in Athens. But starting this winter of 2008, only two families left.
My last months, both at Athens High School and in Athens, Ohio, I experienced sitting for SAT again and happily, I scored 1210 which is the ideal score to passed the state level. Also I went to Athens High School 2006-2007 school prom. My friends, Alicia and Madelaine helped me bought a dress. It was red in color and it only cost $5. Imagine that! Madelaine went with Pablo while Alicia went with Adam. Unfortunately, I didn't have a date. We all had dinner at Luilouis. The food was great. Mahirah also managed to graduate elementary school with a scroll. Unfortunately I didn't as I supposed to have another year, my senior year at Athens High.
At the end of our stay, we had lots of fun since we have fallen in love with Athens. My father has given a chance to extend our stay but he opposed the position for someone else to take his place. He said that the job is someone else's turn to be experience what we have experienced. Now, it has been almost three months we arrived back in Kuala Lumpur. Sometimes it feels as if it's only a dream. We sometimes imagine our lives back in Athens. We absolutely will miss everything relates to it.

Manhattan for winter break?

How was DC & NYC?
I'll tell you ...
On Saturday morning, we took off from 45, Maplewood Dr, Athens, OH at 10.20 am for Washington DC. We stopped by the rest area for a couple of times. We arrived in DC at about 5 pm and that was because we were lost. As we arrived at the Mara House, Aunty Anni who works there just arrived as well with the new pengarah, replacing Aunty Radz. Got the key and we slept in for a night.
The next day, our train left the Union Station which was a so-awesomely-great building at 10.20 am. The train stopped at seven different stations including Baltimore in Delaware, Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and Trenton in New York/New Jersey. We arrived at Penn. Station at Madison Square Garden at about 2 pm more or less. We took the famous New York yellow cab to our hotel, Shelburne Murray Hill at 37th street and Lexington Avenue. There was this kinda huge demonstration about opposing the war in Iraq so almost all junctions were closed. Our cab was a young Paki, got mad about the terrible traffic. He cursed about two-three times to other drivers. We passed by lots of interesting places. He charged $19 (though he stopped the meter, got pity on us - traffic was terribly bad).
Our hotel room was a family suite. There was a small kitchen, small dining room, a living room, a small bathroom, two TVs and two double beds. It was nice at first until the time when we tried to get some sleep; I guess the phrase "New York never sleeps" is true. There were car honking every now and then. Anyway, after we had settled in, we went out to get lunch. Or may I say, dinner as well. We walked down until 28th street. Found an Indian restaurant, bought two platters of Tandoori, ate in our hotel room.
The next day we walked down to the Empire State building. Took some pictures. Thought of going up but ayah refused to pay, says that it was pretty expensive, $25 per adult. We did not argued, left for Gap. Found this cool purse (hand bag). Its $84 including tax. I love it. Ayah loves it. Mama.. eh.. It was OK. Adik, no comment. We were going to keep in view. Later went to Macy's. Did only window shopping. Nice purses. Nice shades, pants, blouses, shoes, etc. Lots of shoppers. Kinda crowded. Mama bought a pair of Calvin Klein socks than we just left. Bought lunch/dinner, we then headed to our hotel.
On Monday, we walked up to the Chrysler building. Took some more pictures. Dropped by the Grand Central Terminal Market. It was neat and decent. Went crossed to 43rd street, thinking about going to the Permanent Mission of Malaysia To The United Nations but was stopped by a Malaysian, Dato Abu Bakar Jaafar (ayah's acquaintance). He walked us to the UN plaza. Then he left for a meeting there. Walked some more to the UN building itself. Was stopped again by an Indonesian who's working at the Brunei Darussalam Mission to United Nation. He then called another Malaysian officer who worls there too. Ayah and him talked a little then we left.
The next day, after breakfast, we headed to Seventh Avenue to the famous Time Square. It was remarkable. Took lots of pictures. Sorta. Then went back to Gap to buy the purse that Ayah and I love. Bought a pair of heels for Mama at Aerosoles, a pants for Adik at American Eagle and a shirt for Ayah himself. We didn't visit much more that day. Mama's feet hurt. Everyone was tired. But it was fun. Totally. Awesome!
The Amtrak train left Penn. Station for Union Station, DC at 8.10 am. It was very busy, at the station. People were rushing to go to work. Everyone was wearing suits and formal clothes. When we got to MARA House again, we had lunch then we went a little more shopping in Georgetown. We left DC at 8.30 am, this morning. Stopped by Prime Outlet to do a little more shopping. Bought Chicago Knives, Pretty Pink dinner set Corelle and a frame of world map. Arrived back in Athens at 4 pm.
